Who is at risk for gynecologic cancer?

The following are risk factors for different kinds of gynecologic cancers. Each cancer has its own general risk factors, and may affect women in various ways. Every woman is different, so talk to your doctor or gynecology oncology specialist about any questions or concerns you may have.

Risk factors include:

  • Post menopausal (over age 50)
  • Endometrial hyperplasia – a condition where the cells of the endometrium are abnormal
  • Cervical dysplasia – a condition where the cervical cells are abnormal
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • High blood sugar
  • Other cancers (colon, rectal, breast)
  • Early age of first menstruation
  • Women who have never been pregnant
  • Hormone-related issues
  • Family history of breast or ovarian cancer

This is a test in which a small scraping of the cells on the mouth of the womb are taken in order to study if there are any abnormal / cancer cells there .it helps to catch cancers of cervix at an early stage and offer prompt treatment.

A high power camera which helps the doctor visualise the mouth of the womb and the cells thereof in great detail. This is required to screen for abnormal growths / cells on the cervix and effect rapid treatment if required.

The area between the outer portion of the cervix (ecto cervix) and the inner canal of the cervix (endo cervix) is called the transformation zone. This is the area from where most of the cancers of the cervix originate. Removing this area in a highly suspicious patient is called as LLETZ. It helps preserve the womb and future fertility and also removes precancerous areas.
